Mental Health First Aid Training

While most people know something about common first aid, many acknowledge they have a lack of knowledge about how to support someone who is experiencing poor mental health. With one in five New Zealanders experiencing mental illness at some point in their lives, developing capability and knowledge to address this is an important part of supporting your workforce.

Description

What you will learn

This mental health training workshop teaches attendees how to assist people who are experiencing mental health distress, developing a mental illness, or are in a mental health crisis, when to intervene, and how to best support others.

During this two-day workshop, attendees will learn the ALGEE five-step action plan:

  • Approach, assess and assist any crisis
  • Listen non judgmentally
  • Give support and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage other supports

What people are saying

"Mental unwellness can be uncomfortable and confronting to talk about and deal with, but this workshop helped us to understand how to normalise the issues and gave us the tools and confidence to deal with people in need of support in our workplace (international students in my case) and out in the wider community. I think this course should be compulsory in workplaces, so we can look after each other as colleagues and also support the wider communities, particularly in a time when our mental health services are under-resourced." - Mel

“Having completed the course, I am more likely now to consider that a mental health challenge may be the driver behind certain behaviours. I am more confident in identifying the signs that someone is struggling, and it has made me more empathetic in my approach to dealing with challenging or unusual behaviour.” Elizabeth
