Tramping is the perfect recreational activity for mind, body, soul connection – be present, be in the moment, and absorb the wilderness, gaining valuable life skills along the way. Improve your fitness, mental health and wellbeing by nurturing yourself with what nature has to offer.
Discover how to interpret your environment and choose the appropriate trail for you and your group. No matter what your level of fitness, learn how to prepare for changeable weather conditions and diverse terrain, stay safe and have fun while appreciating your surroundings.
Learn how to use rivers to access and explore untouched pockets of nature, as well as the technical skills to get you there and back again. Understand how to navigate the earth’s surface and all that it brings - mud, sand, bog, gravel, slippery rocks and tree roots. You will learn how to prepare for the unexpected and how to respond should an emergency arise. Learn fire light cooking for overnight stays.
Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori is embedded throughout this programme.
We learn about the cultural significance of each outdoor environment we operate in
We look at the contrast between modern and traditional approaches to the activities.

So, whether you are serious about tramping or would just like to build your knowledge and confidence to head out amongst pristine native flora and fauna, tramping opens the opportunity to discover the more about yourself and leave the indoors behind.
What you will learn:

School Leavers (over 16 years of age) – wanting to find your fit and discover your pathway to Outdoor Education
Adults – wanting to gain more confidence to venture into the outdoors and expand your horizons (ask if this activity is suitable for your fitness level)

Tramping Short Course dates - 2 intakes to choose from:
Intake1: 4-day programme over 2 weeks (includes 1 overnight stay)
Week 1: Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th October 2024 (at Wintec)
Week 2: Thursday 10th and Friday 11th October 2024
(on location – Tramp up to Daly’s Clearing Hut via Waitawheta Karangahake, with overnight stay on Thursday night)
Intake 2: 4-day programme over 2 weeks (includes 1 overnight stay)
Week 1: Thursday 7th and Friday 8th November 2024 (at Wintec)
Week 2: Thursday 14th and Friday 15th October 2024
(on location – Tramp up to Daly’s Clearing Hut via Waitawheta Karangahake, with overnight stay on Thursday night)
